Diamond Aircraft presents DA42 prototype to the Vienna Technical Museum

Since 1918 the Technisches Museum Wien (TMW) is showcasing unique exhibits from the past, present and future with a special focus on Austrian achievements.

With the development of the world’s first serial aircraft powered by efficient common rail diesel technology, Diamond Aircraft has set new standards in general aviation. Today the company is one of the largest manufacturers in the light aircraft segment.

An impressive piece of Austrian aviation history is now also on display at the TMW. The original DA42 flight test airplane, the first DA42 produced, is one of the highlights of the museum exhibition “Transport”.

Christian Dries, CEO Diamond Aircraft: „Our DA42 combines three innovations at once – state-of-the-art carbon technology, modern avionics and the most efficient drive technology. The plane is used for private flying, for airline and military pilot training and for remote sensing applications.”

The DA42 maiden flight took place on 9 December 2002 at Wiener Neustadt in Austria with Diamond owner Christian Dries as test pilot – after only 11 months of development time. One and a half year later the DA42 made the first non-stop transatlantic crossing by a diesel engine powered aircraft in general aviation.

Since the introduction of the aircraft in 2005 it has always been among the world’s bestselling light airplanes and is the bestselling light piston twin on the market today.

Also the AE300 diesel aircraft engine developed and produced by Austro Engine (a company of the Diamond Aircraft Group) is exhibited at the museum. The trend-setting innovation has a 45 % lower fuel burn at equal power than conventional piston aircraft engines. Moreover it produces significantly less exhaust emissions and is exceptionally silent.

From the pioneering days of engine powered flight with the Etrich II „Taube“ to the present and future of engine powered flight with Diamond Aircraft’s „DA42“ – come and see it in the Technisches Museum Wien.
